Matheran is also known for having a large population of monkeys. Locals have kept horses as their pets, which are then used for riding purposes and for tourists too. If you are a lucky gal, you will be able to see barking deer, wild boar, Malabar giant squirrel, fox or mongoose there too.
Location
It is a beautiful hill station located near the heart of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Pune. It is at a distance of 88 Kms from Mumbai. And 120 Kms drive away from Pune. You can reach the beautiful camping site base by your personal vehicle, public transportation medium or any private transportation means too. It is situated in the Raigad district. It is one of the smallest hill stations in the Western Ghats at an altitude of 200 meters only. Matheran is not a far away place from the main metropolitan cities of Maharashtra, which makes it a perfect weekend hideout and getaway for people. It lies in an elevated region due to which the temperature is less humid and a lot cooler.
Places to explore while you camp
There are a lot of places in Matheran you can visit that will cherish your mood. Some of the most famous points where you will love it are- Alexander Pt., Lords Pt, Charlotte Lake, Pisharnath Mahadev Mandir, sunset point, paymaster park.
Vikatgad is a small hill which is next to Matheran. You can go to Vikatgad by a toy train from Matheran or you can just simply trek in the deep ravines.
Charlotte Lake is a beautiful lake and it is enjoyed the most on sunsets, sunrises and foggy days. The dam overflows during the monsoon season and becomes a tourist attraction. The main supply of water to Matheran town is from this lake itself.
Paymaster Park is also one of the famous attractions in Matheran if you go for camping there. It is a recreational park and a park for kids with a wide range of beautiful flowers.
You can either trek to these places or you can rent a horse for a day and visit these places one by one.
Peak time to go for camping in Matheran
Matheran has a nice weather throughout the year.
If you go in between October to November, the monsoon has just ended and the weather is a little humid but is cool and perfect for witnessing the landscapes around you. Best time for families and kids to go for camping.
If you go in between the months of December to February, these are the winter months. The temperature is cold, stoops about 12-13 degree Celsius low. The day time is warm, while on the other hand, the morning and the night time is cold. Best time for couples to go for camping.
If you go in between the months of March to May, it is the summer time. The weather is not so pleasant during the day time, but is quite nice during the morning and evening time. Not a good time for sight-seeing or trekking.
And if you go for camping in the months of July to September, these are the main monsoon months in the terrain. Most difficult time for trekking and sight-seeing purpose. But if you want to enjoy peaceful rains of Matheran, it is the best time for you to visit Matheran.
