California, is located in the center of the state, just south of the San Joaquin Valley and north of the central coast region. It includes what are now considered the cities of Fresno and Visalia and many smaller communities in between. The county was formed in 1856 from parts of Mariposa, Merced and Tulare Counties, and gained its current boundaries in 1865 when it acquired all of what had been Tulare County following its secession from Mariposa.
